The Khadya Sathi Scheme, launched by the Government of West Bengal on 27 January 2016, stands as a testament to the state’s commitment to ensuring food security for its residents. Spearheaded by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, this initiative aims to provide subsidized food grains to nearly 90% of the state’s population, ensuring that no individual is deprived of their basic right to food.
OBJECTIVES OF THE KHADYA SATHI SCHEME:
- Ensure Food Security: Provide subsidised rice and wheat to eligible households, contributing to food security among Below Poverty Line (BPL) and Economically Weaker Section (EWS) families.
- Streamline Distribution: Facilitate seamless distribution of food grains through biometric authentication and e-Ration Card/QR-code scanning at Fair Price Shops (FPS).
- Digitalisation of Ration Cards: Replace physical ration cards with a digital card (Khadya Sathi Digital Card), which can be accessed via a smartphone or a printed copy, reducing administrative bottlenecks and preventing misuse.
- Universal Coverage of Ration Cardholders: Encompass all existing ration cardholders—Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY), Priority Household (PHH), Rajya Khadya Suraksha Yojana-I (RKSY-I), and Rajya Khadya Suraksha Yojana-II (RKSY-II).
BENEFITS OF THE KHADYA SATHI SCHEME:
- Low-Cost Food Grains: Rice and wheat at ₹2 per kg for eligible families.
- Digital Ration Card: e-Ration Cards accepted via mobile or plain paper printouts.
- Category-Wise Allotment:
- AAY: 21 kg rice + 14 kg wheat per family/month
- PHH/SPHH: 3 kg rice + 2 kg wheat per person/month
- RKSY-I: 5 kg rice per person/month
